Why Does Menopause Happen?

Our bodies were designed to eventually stop being able to get pregnant and have children at a certain age. We're born with a finite number of eggs, stored in ovaries, which also make the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are in charge of the menstruation and ovulation process.

Eventually estrogen and progesterone shift and drop, which kicks off the menopause process. When the ovaries no longer release eggs every month in preparation for pregnancy, menstruation stops. Symptoms of Menopause

1. Irregular Periods: The first sign that you're approaching menopause is that your menstrual cycles start becoming less frequent and/or irregular. Many women will also experience hot flashes—a sudden wave of heat in the head, neck, and chest. These are caused by a decrease in estrogen levels. Hot flashes can also carry over into night sweats, which can then cause insomnia (fun!).

2. Mood Changes: Another symptom is changes in mood, which is less talked about. Because of the dramatic shift in our sex hormones during menopause, our mood, and our mental health, can be impacted. This can look and feel like depression, anxiety, irritability, and/or sadness.

3. Physical changes: Again, blame it on your hormones! Most women will experience some weight gain, especially around their waist. You might also notice more brittle nails, thinner hair, or dry, itchy skin. Your bone density also takes a beating, which is why it's crucial to keep an eye on your bone health at this age.

4. Libido: You might find that your sex drive starts to dwindle during this time. As your hormones shift, there's less blood flow to the vagina, which can make it drier down there while dampening your desire for sex. (A water-based lubricant can help!) But not everyone experiences this—and some women find sex to be even more fulfilling during this time of their life.
